Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does my General dentist have to refer me to an orthodontist?
A: No, while many patients are referred by their family dentist, others take the initiative to make an appointment on their own.  It is expected to maintain your semi annual cleaning with your general dentist through the orthodontic process.

Q: How long will my first visit take?
A: Your first visit is entirely up to you.  Ordinarily the length of the appointment depends on the questions you have for Dr. Karich and our financial coordinator.

Q: Will my insurance pay part of my treatment fee?
A:  Make sure you bring all important insurance information to your first visit so that we can research that information and maximize your orthodontic benefit.

Q: How do I know if it is time to bring my child in for his/her first visit?
A: The American Association of Orthodontics recommends an orthodontic evaluation at the age of seven. By this young age, we can map the growth of their dental pattern.

Q: How long will I be in braces?
A: Depending on the severity of the case, orthodontic treatment can last from 12 to 36 months.

Q: How much do braces cost?
A: It is impossible to know how much the treatment will cost until you or your child has been evaluated.

Q:  Can all of my appointments be scheduled after school?
A: Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that all appointments will be scheduled after school hours.  In order to serve our patients efficiently, long appointements such as banding and debanding are reserved for the morning hours and short routine appointments and retainer checks for the afternoon.

Q: Are there foods that need to be avoided during treatment?
A: A list of these foods are given and discussed with each patient when the braces are applied.  Sticky or hard foods should be avoided along with chewing on ice, pencils, and fingernails.

Q: What if something comes loose or broken?
A: When something comes loose or broken, a special appointment needs to be made to repair the appliance.  Please call our office to ensure the time is available to do any repair work.
